Signs of Vehicle Electrical Problems

Your car, truck, or utility vehicle has a complex electrical system to provide power to the components and accessories. The electrical system starts with an alternator that generates voltage and converts it into current. The current moves through the electrical wiring to power anything that needs power. If your automobile is having electrical problems, you will have one or more of the following issues.

Blown Fuses

The alternator should never generate voltage above 14.5 volts, but, sometimes, the alternator malfunctions and produces excess voltage. Unfortunately, when this happens, this overloads the electrical system. As the power surges through the electrical system, it will blow the fuses in the fuse box. Consequently, you will find yourself changing fuses frequently.

Burning Smells

In addition to the fuel issue, you may also smell burning odors in your vehicle or coming from the engine. The odors may smell like burning wires or burning rubber. This is a sign that the electrical system is overheating. It is important that you pull over and turn off the engine to stop the electrical generation. If you continue to drive your automobile, you may end up starting an electrical fire.

Dead Battery

The battery relies on the alternator to keep it charged. The alternator produces and converts enough voltage for your power accessories and components and to charge the battery. If the alternator is malfunctioning or going bad, you may end up with a dead battery under the hood. Another sign that you have an electrical problem is a frequent need to jump-start the battery.

Difficult Starts

In addition, it can become difficult to start your automobile if there is an electrical system problem. Specifically, again, the battery needs electricity. The starter also needs electricity to turn over the engine for engine combustion. If you have been having problems getting your automobile started lately, it’s possible that the underlying cause of the issue is the electrical system.

Malfunctions

Finally, as we mentioned, the electrical system transports power to all of your power accessories and components. If any of these accessories or components are not getting enough electricity, they will malfunction. Strange things such as the radio turning off by itself can start to happen. You may also have problems with the headlights, interior lights, and taillights.
