Is It OK To Drive On Empty?

We have all been there. You had a long day at the office that left you exhausted. Traffic snarls have kept you from making it home anywhere close to the normal time, and like everyone, you are worried about political strife at home and abroad. You are 15 minutes from your driveway and – surprise – your gas light activates. You know you drive by one more gas station on your way home, but it’s on the wrong side of the road and you really just don’t feel like stopping and adding to your headache of a day. But is it really OK to drive on empty? Max Mile Car Care Center warns against it, for a few different reasons.

You Could Run Out Of Gas

This is the most obvious one. At some point, your car just isn’t going to run any longer without gas. Like a human body without food or water, your car just can’t continue to run without gas. Not only could this be embarrassing – being stranded on the side of the road and waiting for a tow truck certainly doesn’t sound like anyone’s idea or a party – but it can also be dangerous. Imagine if you are someplace a little more desolate, you run out of gas, and you realize your phone is dead as well? What would you do? Start walking, I suppose…

Your Car Was Made To Run On Gas

Your car’s fuel pump is designed to be submerged in gasoline, pumping it to where it needs to go. If you let your car run out of gas – especially regularly – you could damage the fuel pump or various other parts of the fuel line. Ask any trained auto technicians; these pieces are not easy or cheap to repair or replace. There is an easier alternative to expensive repairs – simply get gas when your car needs it.

Just Get Some Gas!

At Max Mile Care Care Center in Hallam, PA, we get that long days happen, and you don’t always feel like taking that 10 minutes to stop for gas. That being said, just do it anyway. The consequences of driving on empty far outweigh the benefits, so it just makes more sense to stop and get some gas.
