Four Possible Causes of Engine Stalling

Few things are as frustrating as dealing with engine stalling. It can also be incredibly dangerous for you and for the drivers around you. There are a lot of potential causes for engine stalling, and Max Mile Car Care Center wants you to know a little more about four of those possible causes.

Bad Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are what creates the spark for combustion, so they’re a necessary part of the whole combustion equation. If the spark plugs are old, damaged, or simply worn out, then they’re not offering up any of what your car’s engine needs in order to keep running. That’s when you’ll start to experience issues with stalling and even with hard starting.

Problems with the Airflow Sensor

The airflow sensor is the sensor that gives the engine control module information about airflow into the engine. If that sensor is failing, dirty, or otherwise feeding bad information to the ECM, that can lead to the fuel to air mixture being wrong. That, in turn, can mean that your car’s engine starts to stall when you’re driving. Cleaning or replacing the sensor may be all that’s needed in order to correct the stalling problem.

Bad Gas

What you put in your car’s tank makes a huge difference, and if that fuel is contaminated in any way that can cause big problems for your car’s engine. Some of the contaminants that can foul gas include too high an alcohol content, water, or anything else added to gasoline that shouldn’t be there. Usually if bad gas is the problem, it happens very shortly after the bad gas got added to the tank.

Electrical Problems

Sometimes electrical problems aren’t easy to spot and you’ll experience other problems first because of the electrical issues. For instance, if the alternator and battery are having issues, that increased charging load can cause the engine to stall. If the problem is the battery, charging it can correct the issue. Problems with the alternator may require that you simply replace the alternator in order to resolve the engine stalling.

It isn’t always a fast process to discover exactly what is causing your car’s engine to stall, but Max Mile Car Care Center in Hallam, PA is committed to helping you. We can do diagnostic testing to narrow down what might be contributing to your engine stalling issues and then we can recommend a course of action.
